The Small-scale and Artisanal Fisheries Research Network (SAFRN) is an interdisciplinary group of students, researchers, and faculty based in San Diego.  We started in 2010 as a group of students who sought to build a community that would share expertise and ideas about the research and management of these fisheries, developing into a Research Focus Area of the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.  We now comprise members from diverse disciplines at the Scripps Institution of Oceaongraphy, UC San Diego, San Diego State University, and the Southwest Fisheries Science Center.

Our goal is to serve as an interdisciplinary hub of communication and research that is useful for the management of small-scale and artisanal fisheries, through:

  • Guiding student research
  • Fostering communication
  • Encouraging collaboration
  • Coordinating analyses across sites, projects, and regions
  • Conducting new research
  • Raising interest and awareness through outreach
